In 1997 Final Fantasy VII shocked us with a 3d world, super deformed graphics and a complete change to Final Fantasy as we know it. In 1999 it shocked us again, this time with a cooler world, the most realistic characters ever and even more of a complete change to Final Fantasy as we know it.
To start, there were only 6 characters. This was a setback from 8. Each one had a personality and a special Limit Break and each one was drastically different. There was actual character development and each character looked like a real person instead of a cat on a stuffed moogle or a lion.
They even changed the weapons. Now you could only have one weapon and this was remodelled the more tools and items you found. This made it hard to get better weapons and certainly you didnt rely on the best armour, there was NO armour. You had a defence status and that was it.
Levelling up was bad in this game. Although it made your stats higher, it made your enemies stats higher. So in this game levelling up was a double-edge sword and quiet usually, you had the edge that pierced your flesh more often (some enemies had over 500,000 hp if you were level 100)
Increasing stats was the thing that turned many away, The Junction System. MP was done away with and replaced with Draw. With it, magic was bunched up and you could use it to increase your players stats. It was very confusing and still hard to understand, I say use Auto, it made it easier.
Summons were now the staple to the Junction system, now could be used as a shield and an attack. They were needed for the Junction system and were powerful attacks. They could be boosted to make their attacks stronger. Boost was probably the most unusual button mashing technique ever.
The story was not one that hit you instantly like in Final Fantasy VII (the planet is dying, save it). It took roughly 2 and a half disk to discover the true plot, everything else was building up to the grande daddy of the story. It was an interesting story with good detail, although very slow.
The Music to this game was probably Nobuos best work. Many cannot forget Liberi Fatali (it was in the Olympics too), which started the game. Others will still hum the battle music and boss music to this game and many still sing Eyes on Me, the first lyric song of Final Fantasy. The music to this game is music to cherish.
The game may not have many side quests but the ones it has were some of the greatest. I doubt you will find a player of this game who does not like Triple Triad, the simple card game that was highly addicting. There were many more but this is one most predominant.
Spending Gil was hard as it no longer spilled out of dead carcasses. It came from salary that depended on your rank. You could increase your rank by doing certain things or by taking tests that gave you interesting information. It ticked off some people but not all.
The game had some replay value but mostly it was the same adventure again. Although this is a monstrous game, it doesnt have much to stray off the path. You did get a slow boat/airship somewhat quickly though so you could explore.
The world map was much larger then FFVIIs. However it was more spread out then FFVIIs. There was only 8 towns as well, each with its own features. There were many dungeons. Some were small like the fire canyon at the start and others were huge.
Overall this game may not be a standard Final Fantasy Game but if you can embrace change, you have just found the best Final Fantasy Game in existence.
10/10
