Up until 1000
years ago, the world of Spira was home to a host of highly developed civilizations.
But then Sin appeared. A scourge on the world, Sin may be felled, but can
never be truly defeated. It brought chaos and destruction to Spira. Since
then, the people have lived in fear of the Machina technology which brought
Sin to the world.
1000 years later, a group of six walk together to protect a young summoner
with one goal, to destroy Sin.
Only the "Last Summoning" of the Final Aeon can defeat Sin, and it comes
with a great price.
"I will defeat Sin. I must."

2001 was a year many people
went out to buy the newest addition to gaming, a PS2. With it people
were hoping that a Final Fantasy was to come and people would be
happy to know one did, the tenth one in the series. Not only did
this one introduce a stack of new features, it was the last of a
few things.
This was the last game Squaresoft
ever designed by themselves. They combined with Enix to form Square
Enix. Ever since then, I believe their quality of games has gone
down. This was also the last game Nobuo, God of Music ever composed.
He left us with some of his best work (Hymn of the Fayth and Suteki
Da Ne)
However this was also where
a few first of a few things took place. This was the first of the
PS2 Final Fantasy games. This was also where, for the very first
time, voices were introduced. Although it did not match the characters
moving lips all the time, it certainly was a feature.
This is also the first Final
Fantasy not to have the ATB battle engine. It introduced the CTB
battle engine that ran more like a standard RPG battle engine. This
wasnt very well received by some as it made the battle flow very
easy to manipulate to your advantage.
The graphics to this game
though were probably the best graphics of its time. The faces had
actual detail, it had moving lips as well. You could see every strand
of their (often insane) hair. The FMVs were mind-blowing. Simply
that. The attacks and weapons had true design as well.
The 7 characters each had
a personality of their own. They all had different weapons, customisable to have different abilities. Their voices reflected
their character well, however there was very little character development.
Each had their own Overdrive attack.
The levelling up system
was a very unique and fresh idea. The Sphere Grid. Every time your
characters won a battle, their ap would rise and they would gain
SpLevels. Then you would spend them to move across the grid to nodes.
Some had status rising abilities, others attacks and many things.
Each character was restricted to a part of the grid but by the end,
each character would have the exact same attacks and stats.
The Map is probably the
most linear map in the world. Set in Spira, you go from South to
North and more often then not, you cant go back until of the
way through where you can explore the whole of Spira. However there
was no overworld, there was just paths to follow. I personally did
not like this.
The story is one of the
best features of the game. It begins on a false trail and then it
continues until halfway where some of the truth is revealed before
exploding a huge web of plot. Its simply amazing how they did it.
The Side quests were a different
matter. Although some were fun such as Omega Ruins and levelling
up, most were some of the most tedious in the world. One example
involves having to dodge 200 lightning bolts in a row. Another is
to reduce your time to under 0 seconds on a chocobo. This is not
fun its hard.
This game has almost no
replayability. You couldnt do much except experiment with the sphere
grid. Aside from that and a bit more, its basically the same game
again.
Aside from a few problems
and a few different ideas that didnt work, this game is pretty
fun.
8/10
