There are a few servers in the game, here's a list of them. The server numbers are 1 - 19 respectively:

Since you cannot choose which server you play on, the creators made a way so you can play on the same server as your friends. Its called "The World Pass" System.
Someone already playing must buy a world pass. It costs gil (in the game). The price varies.
The pass comes with a code which you can give to your friends.
When your friend makes a character they put in the code you gave them.
They will then start their character on the same server as yours.
