Review
This game holds a place in my heart because it was the first game I got for the PSX (see game-slang). I love this game but let's review it in more depth. Note that it contains spoilers so read if you must.
The game's story isn't enough to get you into the game. Though not as good as other games it is great in it's genre. The plot is magnificent and rich. I mean a sorcerer using zombies and possessing the townsfolk. Making everybody after your bones. The graphics are fabulous for a game of it's time. The fmv's (game-slang) are incredible. The models are great. The graphics, maps, character models, items and bosses are all great. The only flaw is Sir Dan's head sometimes isn't on his body. Only flaw.
The game-play is great. You have to re-kill a certain amount of monsters to fill a chalice from the Hall of Hero's (more on that later) with souls. Once it's full, you can touch it. Collecting it will give you passage to the Hall of Hero's where dead hero's are. Their statues are alive and will give you weapons, gold, and even life bottles (later on). Sir Dan's statue is their as well but it's not solid. If you collect all chalices... it becomes solid and you get an extra movie. So you can re-play the game to get all chalices and secrets... giving this game great replay value.
Your life system is a bit different to other games. You have a bar with 300 points. If you get hurt in battle you lose points. If you lose all 300, you die. If you fall over a cliff, fall in water or fall into darkness you lose all 300 points. "Wow! That bites." HANG ON!!! Remember in the H.H (Hall of Heros) I said you got LIFE bottles. These have an extra 300 points in them, so if you lose your life and have a bottle, then you get all the points back. To refill them you can get life vials, they give a few points. The other life replenisher is life fountains. These give about 1000 points back. Maybe more. That means that you might not get a full life bottle. So if you run out, you get left with a slightly empty bar or so.
The level designs are great. You have a world map to start with. All area's usually are black until you complete the level before it. The level design's are great themselves. The bosses don't have a special level (except Zarok). They just appear in some levels. They often give great stuff or unlock a path or lead the way out. The bosses get their own life bar but have no life bottles (phew!)
The sound is a bit boring. It tends to drag on. The boss theme isn;t what you want. It just is one of the falls of this great game.
