Metroid is one of Nintendo's long time staple franchises. The original Metroid was released for the NES in 1986, and has since had at least one sequel on every Nintendo system except for Gameboy Color and the N64. The series has come a long way in 20 years, splitting into an FPS sub-series and adding a multiplayer option. Each game puts the player in the role of Samus Aran, a human bounty huntress who was rescued as a child and raised by a philosophical race of aliens called the Chozo. Her adventures take her from planet to planet, usually in persuit of her ultimate goal: to exterminate the entire Metroid species, and stop all Space Pirate activities concerning them.
