Anju-Kafei Sequence
This side-quest rivals the Biggeron's Sword trading sequence in its complexity and drawn out chain of events. In order to complete the Anju-Kafei sequence, you must finish the whole thing without playing the Song of Time, or, like all other events, you will have to start over from the beginning. I recommend playing the Inverted Song of Time right away, and spending your between-hours playing the many mini-games in Clock Town, all the while keeping a close eye on the clock. You will not be able to successfully complete this without the Hookshot. Completion will also be rendered impossible if you save the Old Bomb Lady on Day 1, so it is imperative that you let her get robbed.
DAY ONE
10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.: Talk to Madam Aroma in the drawing room of the Mayor's Office in East Clock Town to learn that her son, Kafei, has gone missing mere days before his wedding to the innkeeper Anju. She will give you Kafei's Mask and tell you to look for him, thinking that you are the investigator she hired. This step does not have to be repeated if you decide or have to start over. Also, for a bit of background as far as Kafei goes, you can read his diary if you go through the back door in the drawing room and then behind the curtain.
2:10 p.m.: The Postman will be in the inn delivering a letter to Anju. You may observe the conversation, if you want.
2:15 p.m. - 3:50 p.m.: Anju must be a little light headed from the news, if you talk to her maskless between these times she’ll confuse you with Link the Goron and give you the key to his reserved room. There’s a chest with 100 rupees inside. Not a bad deal, if you can live with yourself for making that poor Goron sleep outside.
2:10 p.m. - 9:10 p.m.: Talk to Anju at the Stock Pot Inn after the postman leaves while wearing Kafei's Mask. She says to meet her later in the kitchen so that she can tell you something.
4:00 p.m.: Link the Goron will be checking in for his stay at the Stock Pot. Or trying to, if you stole his key. You can observe the conversation if you want to.
11:30 p.m.: Put on the Deku Mask and sneak in through the second story entrance, than make your way down to the kitchens as normal Link. Anju will BE in the kitchen at 12:00. When you talk with her, she will confess that she received a letter from Kafei, and would like you to send her reply and then check on Kafei for her. Drop her letter in the nearest mailbox (it's red, can't miss it) on your way out.
Note: If you aren’t inside the inn before midnight, she won’t be there.
Note: You have to drop the letter off before 9:00 a.m. Day 2.
DAY TWO
4:15 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.: By 3:40 p.m., the Postman will have delivered the letter to Kafei. At 4:15 p.m. the door in the Laundry Pool will be unlocked, and you can get into the Curiosity Shop's back room to talk to Kafei. As it turns out, Skull Kid turned Kafei into a child, and then Sakon the thief took advantage of this to steal his Sun's Mask. When he finishes his story he will give you the Pendant of Memories, a symbol of his undying love for Anju. Take it to her as soon as you can.
9:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.: If you’ve already given Anju the pendant, and you stole Goron Link’s key on Day 1, you can go into your room and eavesdrop on a conversation Anju has with her mother about staying behind.
10:00 p.m. - 12:30 a.m.: Go into the back room of the Curiosity shop and look through the peephole. If you didn’t save the Bomb Lady, which you shouldn’t have if you want to get any further, you’ll see Sakon pop in and try to sell the shop owner some loot.
DAY THREE
1:00 p.m. -10:00 p.m.: Go back to the Laundry Pool and the Curiosity Shop's back room to find out the Curiosity Shop's owner's role in this story. He will give you the Keaton Mask that Kafei was sporting earlier, as well as a letter to Kafei’s mother.
6:00 p.m.: In Ikana Canyon, on the ledge overlooking the river, you will find Kafei hiding behind a rock. Hide with him, and then sneak in with him when Sakon opens the door. It is important that you don’t let Sakon see you, as he will run away, leaving the giant stone door closed. The inside is a tricky puzzle with a time limit. The Sun’s mask is on a conveyor belt leading to a drop-off, and as soon as you step in, the door shuts behind you and the belt starts rolling. You get to control both Link and Kafei here: Link is on one side of the belt where he must defeat a monster or three in order to open a door on the other side of the belt, letting Kafei through. In Kafei’s rooms, you must quickly solve a block puzzle involving switches: besides the switch that opens the next door on Link’s side, there are switches that slow down the belt, and switches that speed it up. These slow down buttons are important, as they give you more time. Time is critical in this puzzle, I didn’t get it my first try, and let me tell you; it’s a pain having to redo everything up to that point.
Red- Speed Up (Avoid at all cost)
Yellow- Slow Down (Step on as often as possible)
Blue- Open Door
6:00 p.m. - : Take the letter to the Postman at the West Clock Town Post Office. The timing of the next few events depends on when you gave the postman the letter. Eventually he’ll get the job done, go and talk to him outside the Milk Bar. He will thank you, and then give you his hat, now free to run out of town. The Lady Aroma who gave you the Kafei Mask in the very beginning of the quest is down in the bar, drinking her fill. Go and talk to her after the postman has delivered his letter, and she will give you a bottle of Chateau Romani- bottle included. As if you have time to make any use of the vintage milk before losing it to the Song of Time, but at least you can keep the bottle.
1:30 Left: By now Kafei will have made it to the room of the Stock Pot Inn where Anju is waiting. If you wait inside with her, you can witness their reunion. Go and talk to them in the little time you have, and they will present to you the Couple’s Mask. Congratulations, as this is by far the hardest Happy Mask to earn in the entire game. Every single NPC in the game gives you a different response when wearing it, and if you talk to the Mayor during his argument with the Guards and the Builders, he will give you a Piece of Heart. Quite worth it.
