Items/Equipment
The Zelda Series is famous for having the option of setting whatever item you want to whatever button you want. And with the Sword and the Sheild with buttons all their own, that still leaves three places for whatever the player feels like, or needs at the time. With over 20 masks, as well as the standard array of weapons and explosives, there would be no other way to survive in the land of Termina.
Swords
Kokiri Sword- This is the sword you have in the very beginning of the game. It's reach is short but it has okay attack power.
Razor Sword- This sword has about the same reach as the Kokiri Sword, but with better attack power. You can get this by thawing out the forge in the Mountain Village and paying full price.
Golden Sword- This sword has a longer reach than the Kokiri or Razor Sword and is more powerful than the Razor Sword. You can get this by giving the man at the forge some Gold Dust.
Great Fairy's Sword- This sword requires both hands to wield, and is longer and more powerful than the Golden Sword. It is a C-button item, so you cannot use the same attacks that you can with your normal sword, and it is slower. You can get this by returning all of the stray fairies to the Great Fairy at Ikana Canyon.
Fierce Deity Link's Sword- When you put on the Fierce Deity Mask, your sword will transform along with you. It's reach and power is the same as the Fairy's Sword, and it has more maneuverability. If your magic bar is not depleted, you can shoot beams from the end of the sword.
Shields
Hylian Shield- This is the shield you get at the beginning of the game. It blocks all moderate physical attacks.
Mirror Shield- This shield provides much better defense than the Hylian Shield, and it even blocks some magical attacks. It can also reflect light.
Transformation Shield- Each different transformation has it's own natural shield that can be used by pressing the shield button. It is usually about equal in strength to the Hylian Shield.
Transformation Masks
Deku Mask- This mask transforms you into a small Deku child. You get this mask when the Happy Mask Salesman teaches you the Song of Healing.
Goron Mask- This mask transforms you into a warrior of the Goron people. You get this mask when you play the Song of Healing to the deceased Darmani's ghost at the Goron graveyard.
Zora Mask- This mask transforms you into a descendant of the Zora heroes. You get this mask when you play the Song of Healing to Mikau after dragging him back to shore.
Fierce Deity's Mask- This mask transforms you into a dark and powerful warrior. You can get this mask only if you have all twenty Happy Masks. Talk to the four children on the Moon and complete each of their personal dungeons after giving them some of your masks. Save your transformation masks though. Once you have given them all away, talk to the Majora's Mask child to receive the Fierce Deity's Mask.
Bottle Items
Bottles- Bottles are used for saving stuff for later use, and otherwise general putting in of stuff.
Pink Fairy- A pink fairy will revive you the moment you run out of hearts and fill them all back up. You can use them any time as well. A quick way to find fairies is by cutting the grass next to owl statues.
Water- No, you can't drink it. It's main use is for watering Magic Beans so that they grow, but it's also fun to dump water in peoples houses and on their heads.
Hot Water- Water that is hot! You can't drink this either, but its good for melting ice.
Fish- These are fun, you can sell them to select people, or find out what happens when you place them in confined areas with bigger fish. Or, like water, you can dump them in peoples houses for no reason, and its more fun than water because they flop about.
Poe- If you destroy a Poe or a Big Poe, you can save their disembodied soul in a bottle. Unlike water and fish, you CAN ingest this. But be careful, the effect it has on you is random, so you don't know if you'll wind up losing hearts, gaining hearts or... something else.
Bug- These creepy crawlers are almost pointless, but they're not. If you let them go next to walls with plant holes in them, they will crawl into the hole and give you whatever they find inside. Look around the Clock Town walls, and at the ranch. The best place to find bugs is in the Stock Pot Inn kitchen.
Red Potion- This potion is like a pink fairy, only it doesn't work if you run out of hearts. It's great if you're just running low, and don't like the constant beeping. Certain characters in the game who are in need of some revitalization will require a bottle of this.
Green Potion- This potion replenishes your magic meter all the way back to full.
Blue Potion- This is like a red and green potion combined. It fills all of your hearts and replenishes all of your magic.
Milk- Two helpings in one bottle! The first gulp fills five hearts and the second gulp fills five more! You can get milk from the bar, the Gorman brothers (only theirs is sour), and if you play Epona's Song for a cow. Moo.
Chateau Romani- This is the strong stuff. Not only does it completely refill your hearts and magic meter, but it also increases your magic meter to the point so that it's nearly impossible to run out. More than double. You can get this at the bar if you help Cremia get to town okay.
Pick-ups
Heart- Picking one of these up replenishes one empty heart container on your health meter. If you're already at full hearts than it will do nothing.
Magic Decanter- Replenishes a bit of energy on your magic meter.
Big Magic Decanter- Replenishes about 4x more of your magic meter than the normal magic decanter.
Golden Skulltula Token- In the Spider Houses, you need to collect thirty of these to unlock something special. You get them by destroying a Golden Skulltula, and then collecting the token.
Other- C-items that you can have more than one of (mainly arrows and bombs) can also be pick-up items.
Piece of Heart- You need to collect four of these to add another heart container to your health meter. They're pretty rare.
Heart Container- You only get these after beating a boss. Picking one up adds another heart container to your heart meter.
Bow & Arrows
Fairy's Bow- Apparently Link's arm muscles have developed enough since Ocarina of Time to allow him to use the bow as a child. It is one of the favorite and most copied weapons from LoZ. It allows you to shoot Arrows at your enemies (or other targets) from afar.
Normal Arrows- These arrows are what the bow shoots. Gravity and the normal laws of physics do not seem to apply to them (possibly they are coated with fairy magic). You can charge them with three different magic upgrades to change the attributes of the arrow. If you shoot an arrow through a torch flame it will become a Fire Arrow.
Fire Arrows- You acquire this arrow expansion in the Woodfall Temple. They are a lot more convenient than Deku Sticks for lighting torches, as there is not always another lit torch nearby. They can melt ice, destroy spider webs, and pretty much just burn things.
Ice Arrows- You acquire this arrow expansion in the Great Bay Temple. Charging your arrows with ice enables them to freeze water temporarily as well as freeze enemies. Like Fire Arrows, Ice Arrows destroy simple enemies in one hit.
Light Arrows- You acquire this arrow expansion in the Stone Tower Temple. Using these on normal enemies could be called overkill. They provide light where normally you would have to use the Mirror Shield to reflect sunlight, and destroy all non-mini-boss-or-above monsters in one blow.
C- Items
Deku Nuts- As normal Link, you can throw them down to create a flash, temporarily stunning your enemies. If you drop them from above as Deku Link, they will actually do damage as well as the flash.
Magic Beans- Plant these in soft soil and water them to instantly grow a magical levitation flower, that will carry you to a ledge you wouldn't have been able to reach any other way.
Deku Stick- The Deku stick makes for a great whacking stick if you grow tired of your sword. It breaks after one swing though, unless you do it in just the right way.... You can also set them on fire, and then use them to light other torches. They won't burn forever though.
Bottles- Bottles are good for putting stuff in. If you use a bottle while it is empty, you will swing it through the air, either capturing something inside it, or looking like a dufus because you just swung an empty bottle through the air.
Hookshot- This must've been invented by someone with true genius. You target something that the hook can latch onto, it shoots there on a chain, grabs it, then pulls you there by reeling in the chain. I want one. You find it in the Gerudo Pirate's fortress. You can shoot your enemies with it if you're out of arrows, but it only stuns them if they're ground dwelling.
Pictograph Box- The pictograph box is a wondrous device that captures light and imprints it onto photographic paper! Most people call them cameras. Only one picture can be stored on it at a time. You get the Pictograph Box when you sign up for the Swamp Boat Cruise, to participate in the photo contest. There are other characters you meet that also appreciate the occasional family shot, so keep it handy.
Ocarina of Time- You have this item from the very beginning of the game, and it is by far the most important. You can play songs you have learned on it, and each song has a different magical after affect. The Song of Time, the first song you learn, carries you back in time to the beginning of the three-day cycle.
Bombs- Hmm... well... they explode. And explosions destroy things. Like boulders, cracked walls, enemies, you name it, it can blow up. Well, not everything. Your blasts hurt you as well, so be out of the way before they go off.
Bombchus- You know those wind-up toys, where it keeps going until the spring runs down and then you wind it up again? Well these are like that, only they explode when their spring runs down, and they cling to anything, including walls and ceilings. Very useful if there is a bomb-able patch of wall or a switch out of your reach.
Powder Keg- Gorons are about three times bigger and ten times bigger than everyone else. It makes sense that the bombs they make also fit that description. Powder Kegs can do everything bombs can, as well as everything they can't. The blast range and power is huge, but you can only throw and carry the giant things as a Goron.
Lens of Truth- The Lens of Truth lets you see things that would otherwise go unnoticed. Not being able to see things is a dreadful disadvantage; just because something can't be seen does not mean it isn't there. It consumes magic as you use it though, so use it sparingly.
Happy Masks- There is a total of twenty Happy Masks that you can obtain on your journey and each one is good for something different. You can only wear one mask at a time though, because Link only has one face.
Transformation Masks- Putting these on changes what you are entirely, instead of just covering your face. There are four different Masks, three of which you will use very often, and one that can only be used in boss chambers (see Transformation Masks).
Important Items
Important items are C-items that have no real use except to be traded or given away. Title Deeds, Letters to people, and otherwise shiny valuables are common examples of Important Items. You will lose all of your Important Items when you play the Song of Time (they are returned to their original owners as time flows back).
Other Items
Rock Sirloin- I'm sure it tastes really good to the Gorons. I don't know about you, but my favorite kind would be granite. Mmm, boy. You can find this in one of the lanterns in the Goron Village. It's supposed to be a rare delicacy, and it must be, because why go through all the trouble of hiding it in a chandelier?
Stray Fairy- Each of the four areas has a Great Fairy that has been shattered and scattered by the Skull Kid. In the dungeons you can find small fairies of the Great Fairy's respective color. Return them all to the Great Fairy to be rewarded.
Small Key- Small keys open locked doors in dungeons. They only work in the dungeon you find them in.
Big Key- This key is needed to unlock the final door to the boss's chamber inside dungeons. It can only be used in the dungeon you find it in.
