 Characters
There are hundreds of characters in every Pokemon game. And thats not counting the Pokemon. However, like in all RPGs, there are only a few worth mentioning.
 
You- The traditional name for the character that you get to play as is "Red". His name is Ash in the Anime series. Your ultimate goal is to collect data on each and every Pokemon, but earning yourself the title of Pokemon Champion wouldn't hurt either.
Blue - While you hardly hear people naming their Rival "Blue", that is the name that was given to this character in the Gold/Silver Pokemon set. He is called "Gary" in the Anime series. He's been your rival since you were both little kids, and he's not going to back down when you get to go off aspiring to be the Pokemon Champion.
Professor Oak - This old dude is the expert on all things Pokemon. Or so he claims. He helps you out at times and gives you your first Pokemon.
 
Team Rocket - If becoming a Pokemon Master wasn't enough, you get to crush an evil organization that mistreats Pokemon along the way. These guys are nasty and bent on world domination? typical bad guys. You run into them soon after getting your first badge.
Giovanni - Giovanni is the strong trainer that is at the head of Team Rocket. You run into him three times in all, and you battle him all three times.
      
Gym Leaders - In order to prove oneself worthy of the name "Pokemon Champion," you have to defeat the Elite Four. But in order to even be admitted in to fight the Elite Four, you must have at least eight Gym Badges. To get a Gym Badge, you have to defeat a Gym Leader. Conveniently enough, there are exactly eight Gyms in Kanto. It all adds up. The Gym Leaders themselves are Brock, Misty, Lt. Surge, Erika, Koga, Sabrina, and Blaine. Each Leader specializes with one specific Pokemon type. Nobody knows who the eighth Gym Leader is.
   
Elite Four - In order to fulfill your goal of becoming the Pokemon Champion, you have to best the Elite Four in battle. They aren't called elite for no reason, each would be a challenge on their own, but you have to fight them one after another.
Bill - Bill is a computer geek who is completely obsessed with Pokemon. Using his system on the computers allows you to store Pokemon that you've caught, seeing as you can only carry six. When you meet him he gives you a ticket that lets you on the S.S. Anne.
Celio - Celio is a fellow nerd friend of Bill's that is introduced to you about halfway through the game. He sets you up with your ticket to the mysterious new island chain, in exchange for your help with his Network Machine project.
