Walkthrough

Professor Oak When you first start the game, Prof. Oak will give you a lecture on Pokemon; you'll name yourself, name your rival, and then wake up in your room. Check out your PC before going out, it has a potion in the item storage. Your mom says that Prof. Oak was looking for you. Go to his lab (the huge building two doors down), just to learn from your rival that he isn't there. Go on out again and into the grass. The Professor will take you back to his lab and give you the choice of one out of three pokemon.

There is Bulbasaur, the Grass and Poison type, Squirtle, the Water type, and Charmander, the Fire type. Choose whichever you like best, but keep in mind that the first two gym leaders will be very easy if you choose Bulbasaur, very hard if you choose Charmander, and moderate if you choose Squirtle. It's like choosing a temporary difficulty level. After you pick, your rival will choose the one with a type advantage over yours. When you try to leave, you get in a short fight with your rival. You both only have one level 5 with no special attacks so the battle won't be very eventful, just keep using your physical attack (Scratch or Tackle) and if you get low on health use the potion you took out of your PC earlier. You should have no trouble winning.

Every time you beat an opposing Pokemon all the Pokemon that participated will get EXP points. You can look at how much total EXP a Pokemon has gained and how much more they need before they can advance to the next level under stats. There is also the blue bar under the HP bar that you can see during battle. Keep a close eye on this. Also every time you defeat a trainer they will have to forfeit half of their money to you, but keep in mind that if you lose you will lose half of yours. You should get 175 Pokedollars for beating your rival, and your starting Pokemon should gain enough EXP to grow to level 6.

Once you win, head into the grass that Professor Oak stopped you from going into earlier. One small step, check behind you. Any crazy old obsessive scholars? Nope! It's safe! On you're way up you will encounter wild Pidgeys and Rattatas. They shouldn't be too hard to beat, and you will probably gain another level by the time you reach Viridian City. The first person you encounter on your way will give you a Potion and tell you that you can get more like it at the local PokeMart. Sweet.

Once you get into town, heal your Pokemon at the Center, which is the building with the huge red roof. It's always good to know where these are, you never know when you need to heal or swap out for a different Pokemon. The PC here will be of no use yet, but have a good look around. The trading center is being worked on.

After the Pokecenter, head over to the Mart, the building with the big blue roof. It's always good to know where these are too. The guy behind the counter recognizes you as a Pallet Town Citizen, and he wants you to deliver something to Oak. Yay, you get to start a delivery service instead of becoming the greatest trainer ever! Woot! Take the same path back to the Lab, but notice that this time you can jump over the ledges. This way you can avoid the grass, but I would go through all the grass if I were you, so as to help to grow another level.

When you get there, Professor Oak gives you lecture about how wonderful knowledge and gives you an empty Pokemon Encyclopedia and says to fill it in. The Pokedex will add a picture of a Pokemon to it once you have seen it in any battle, and you can listen to its cry and check the area to see where you can find one. Once you catch a pokemon it will put in stats like the height and general information. The area feature is the most useful feature, for it lets you track down any Pokemon you don't have. A suggestion for if you plan on completing the 'dex, catch every Pokemon you can that you don't have in every new patch of grass you come to. You will have more than 100 entries by the time you get to the Elite Four if you do this. The Prof. will also give you 5 PokeBalls before you leave.

On your way back to Viridian City, stop by your rival's house for a town map. It’s a pretty pointless item, but its good to have. Go back up through the grass, and see if you can get your Pokemon to grow another level if you didn't earlier. Whoever you chose, you should have learned a special type move by now. For Charmander its Ember, Bulbasaur's is Leech Seed, and Squirtle's is Bubble. For Charmander and Squirtle this will do more damage than Scratch or Tackle, and Bulbasaur's slowly saps away at the foes health while restoring his, while not immediately effective, still very useful.

Viridian Forest You can also use one of your Pokeballs to try and catch a Pokemon at this point. Your current choices are limited to Pidgey and Rattata, Pidgey will grow useful as time goes on, as will Rattata, so catch one or both and start training them up in wild battles. The protesting old man has gotten up at this point (coffee is good), and he'll give you the Teachy TV. This is the first of three pointless key items that are new to this set. You can use it if you're new to the Pokemon world, but its contents are almost the exact same as the instruction booklet's.

Before going on and through the Viridian Forest, make sure you stocked up on Antidotes, Potions, and Pokeballs at the Mart. If you want a bit of extra money, you can take on your Rival if you go to the left of the Mart. The grass in that part also has a few new Pokemon, Nidoran Male and Female. Its very hard to find Nidoran Male in Leaf Green, and very hard to find Nidoran Female in Fire Red. There will also be Spearow, a Flying type similar to Pidgey but with a higher Attack stat, making it a bit more useful in battle. There are also Mankey, who will be very useful if you started with Charmander.

Rival's Team #1
Pidgey Lv. 9
***
Bulbasaur Lv. 9 (if your starter was Squirtle)
Squirtle Lv. 9, (if your starter was Charmander)
Charmander Lv. 9 (if your starter was Bulbasaur)

Your Rival's Pidgey is at Lv. 9 so be sure to knock at least him out, you'll get more experience from trainer Pokemon than wild ones, and also more experience if the Pokemon is closely matched with your level. After the Pidgey, the other one will be relatively difficult. You may faint a couple times, so be sure to use all your money on useful items before battling him so you don't lose it all. You should be able to knock out Pidgey each time you try, and that will get you experience, so every time you come back you will be a bit stronger. If you win on your first try good for you.

On your way to the Forest again, check the bush next to the guy who gave you the Educational Television. Well what do you know; a potion! I'm sure you'll notice all the item balls on the other side of the trees on your way to the Forest, you will be able to come back and get those once you get the HM01, Cut. Talk to the guy right inside under a tree to hear that it's easy to get lost, and the guy to the right of him says that people drop items all over the place. Hidden in the grass right behind him is a potion. Also to the far left is a Pokeball.

In addition to the bug type Pokemon Caterpie, Weedle, Metapod, and Kakuna, you can find Pikachus in the woodland grass. They aren't very useful now because your next major battle is against Rock and Ground types, but at the gym after that Pikachu will definitely help you out. On your way through the Forest you will encounter five Bug Catchers and find an Antidote and a Potion. You should have no trouble with the Bug-types if you caught a Pidgey or Fearow, and it won't even be challenging if you started with Charmander. You may have to make a couple trips back to the Center no matter what though.

When you get to the other side, there will be a patch of grass with a few bug types and the same crew from Route 1. I highly recommend not leaving the forest until you have a Pikachu, because you won't be able to go back for a while after you clear Mt. Moon.

Brock Do some sight seeing at Pewter City. Yay a museum! Yay a Center and a Mart! Yay a couple houses! I wanna go look at Mt. Moon! But some kid will spoil your day by taking you to Brock instead of letting you go to Mt. Moon. Darn. Well don't bother trying again cause the kid is still there, along with his "follow me" theme music. Might as well get it over with.

There are usually trainers in gyms before the Gym Leader. It makes sense. Take out the trainer before you try your luck on Brock. If you started with Squirtle hes a pushover, and so is Brock. If you started with Bulbasaur level him up to Lv. 10 first so he knows Vine Whip, if you started with Charmander, well, I warned you.

Gym Leader Brock's Team
Geodude Lv. 12
Onix Lv. 14

Unless you started with Charmander you should be able to take him down in two hits, one for each Pokemon. If you did start with the popular little guy, try using a Mankey from back at Route 22, it learns Karate Chop at Lv. 11 which will prove just as effective as Squirtle or Bulbasaur. If you win, you get the Boulder Badge, and TM39, Rock Tomb. Hold on to it or teach it to somebody who can, take your pick. He says you can also flash, no, my bad, use Flash outside of battle from now on. Whatever dude.

On you're way back to the tourist attraction Mt. Moon, there will be a guy next to where the other guy was who stopped you earlier. He will give you the Running shoes, a very useful invention. There are eight trainers on the way to the cave, and none of them should be too hard. Be sure to take them all on for the experience. In the grass the only new Pokemon is Jigglypuff, a normal type that evolves using a Moon Stone, which you can find in Mt. Moon. However if you evolve it, it won't learn any moves that it would learn at that level as Jigglypuff. Add it to your team or not, your choice.

Go into the Pokemon Center next to the cave entrance and heal your Pokemon whether they need it or not. That way if you faint inside the cave you will start right there instead of back in Pewter City. Also notice that there is a man selling a Magikarp for 500. Most other guides and walkthroughs will tell you to pass on the offer, but I say take it. Magikarp may be crap, but if you leave it in the top slot of your team and switch it out before it can take any damage, it will still get experience. At level 15 it will learn Tackle, so then it can fight for itself, but that’s not nearly as good as what will happen to it at level 20. You should be able to get it to evolve into a Gyarados before you get to Misty if you never swap it out of the top slot. Gyarados learns some pretty sweet moves, so don't pass up the offer; it's pretty cheap anyway.

Mt. Moon is a maze. There are four new Pokemon inside it, Zubat, Geodude, Paras, and Clefairy. Clefairy is exactly like Jigglypuff in appearance, type, evolution, and rarity. This is the only place you can find them in the game so if you don't want to have to come back, catch one now. There are 7 trainers, 6 items, and three exits to this room. Be sure to get all the items before taking any of the exits. The first ladder you come to takes you down a path and then another ladder just to find a dead end, but a dead end with a Team Rocket member and a valuable item. The Rocket will be very helpful experience-wise, but very hard to beat. Get the item and go back to the first floor.

The next ladder is very similar, down, and down again to get another item, and fight another Rocket. The item this time has a practical use, it's TM46, Thief. This Dark-type move is very effective on psychic-types, which you shouldn't have any problems with, but it also steals an item from the opponent if they are holding one. If you come across any wild Paras, be sure to use it, they are known to carry Tinymushrooms. These items come in handy later on in the game. Go back up to the first floor again, and take the last exit possible. Don't leave without every item, there is another TM (09, Bullet Seed) and a Rare Candy, which will boost the level of your Pokemon by one. It’s a good idea to save your rare candies for later on in the game when Pokemon require more experience to gain a level, or at least use it on someone who's current EXP bar is low, that way you won't be wasting it.

Go down, and down some more, get the revive straight up from the ladder, and fight the Rocket in your way. Go all the way around, fight the other Rocket, and check the odd looking rock beyond him but in front of the other guy. There should be another Moon Stone in it. After you pick that up, take on the Super Nerd blocking your path. He'll let you pick first from the two different fossils (what if I don't want one?); the one on the left is Kabuto, and the one on the right is Omanyte. They are both Rock and Water type, but it won't have any importance now, because you won't be able to resurrect them until you get to Cinnabar Island.

Why they put an antidote there I don't know, but pick it up and take the two ladders up and out of the cave! Free at last! There are two fighters training on a hill, one teaches Mega Kick, and one teaches Mega Punch. You can learn both moves, but only once, so think about it before having one teach something. Mega Kick is more powerful but less accurate than Mega Punch, but you may want to learn the move later instead of now. There is also TM05 Roar on the way out. Also your starting should be to at least Lv. 16 at this point, where you probably let it evolve. If you stop a pokemon from evolving when it should, it will miss out on the boosted stats, but learn all its moves at earlier levels. It will try to evolve again at the next level, so don't sweat it if you accidentally stop something from evolving.

Nugget Bridge and Bill In the grass you will be able to catch your first version exclusive, Ekans in Fire Red, and Sandshrew in Leaf Green. Be careful before jumping right into the grass though, once you pass that cliff you won't be able to get back until after you beat the third gym leader.

You'll notice that Cerulean City is much bigger than any of the other towns you've been so far. Before going anywhere else go to the Pokemon Center and heal, so that if you faint you won't wind up back on the other side of Mt. Moon. Also the Mart now carries Super Potions, which heal a bit more than a normal Potion, pick up a couple of those too. Go to the north until you see a bridge. Go up to it, but WHAM! You run into your rival again.

Rival's Team #2
Pidgeotto Lv. 18
Abra Lv. 15
Rattata Lv.15
***
Bulbasaur Lv. 18 (if your starter was Squirtle)
Squirtle Lv. 18 (if your starter was Charmander)
Charmander Lv. 18 (if your starter was Bulbasaur)

This one I doubt you will get right away. His Pidgey has evolved into a Pidgeotto, weak against any Electric or Ice type you have in your arsenal. Abra goes down under Dark type attacks and Bug type attacks, if you were saving your Thief TM now may be a good time to use it. Rattata is a pushover, but his starting has grown. A lot. He could have let it evolve by now but he hasn't for some reason. Squirtle is easily taken down with Plant or Electric, and Charmander should be easily done in with the TM that Brock gave you. Bulbasaur won't be a problem either as long as you kept a flying type in your team. When you beat him he will give you the Fame Checker; Put it in your Key Items pocket and label it Pointless Item #2.

Nugget bridge is right after your rival, where you will have to fight 5 trainers, and then take on the guy who gives you the mysterious Prize (a nugget, maybe?). The first five should be no problem right after your rival, and you can always run back to the Center and heal up. The last trainer is a little tougher though. He'll give you a nugget, which you can sell for a whopping 5000 pokedollars. Then he'll try and force you to join Team Rocket, so kick his sorry butt. However, if you lose to him, you can go back to him and he'll give you another nugget! You can do this as many times as you want and get tons of Nuggets. Then you can sell all of them and make up for all the money you lost. Or you could just kick his sorry butt.

In the grass on the other side of the bridge you will find the next version exclusives for your game. Fire Red features Oddish, and Leaf Green features Bellsprout (Oddish reigns supreme!). They are both plant types, which are very useful against Misty. Be sure to catch one if you didn't start with Bulbasaur. There are also ten trainers on the way to Bill's house, along with TM45, Attract, and TM43, Secret Power. If you want to get Secret Power, make sure to stand a certain distance away from the trainer blocking your way so that he has to walk at least two steps to get to you. That way you can go into the little alcove behind him. If you don't, you'll have to wait till you have Cut to be able to get it again.

Go into Bill's House and have a look around. Nope, nobody home. But he does have a cute little Pokemon… oh wait that is Bill. Odd. Oh, in fact, he turned himself into a Pokemon using a Transporter Machine. If I were you I would back away slowly, and run all the way to Pallet Town. Wait, that's right, Mt. Moon is blocked. Might as well help the poor guy. Once he's back to normal, he'll give you the S.S. Ticket and if you look at his PC you can add the first three of the Eevee evolutions to the Seen part of your Pokedex.

Misty Head back to Cerulean, it's time to take on the Gym Leader of Water.

Misty's Team
Staryu Lv. 18
Starmie Lv. 21

This battle will not be very hard if you chose Bulbasaur. A couple of Vine Whips and you're out of there. If you chose Squirtle, it won't exactly be easy, but still not a major problem. Just back up your starting with either a plant type from Route 24 or a Pikachu from the Viridian Forest. If you caught a Paras, it can learn Bullet Seed, one of the TMs you found in Mt. Moon. Starmie is also part Psychic type, so Thief will be useful here too. If you started with Charmander, your fire-type friend won't come in handy at all. You'll want to leave this battle to one or several of the Pokemon mentioned above. When you win she will give you TM03, Water Pulse.

Once you do this, the police officer that was blocking the house will step aside. You can go through the robbed person's house and out the hole in the back wall. There is a Rocket member right there, so take him down easily and get TM28, Dig. This is a very useful TM for it teaches a move that is Ground type, and Ground is Electric type's only weakness. Since the next gym leader uses Electric types it'll come in handy. Go down the path you couldn't reach before, and check the grass for new Pokemon. I will no longer notify each new pokemon you can find, you'll have to do that on your own (^_^). In the house down all the ledges is the One-Manned Daycare Center. You can leave a Pokemon here, and it will gain one experience for every step you take. That’s quite a few steps in the long run, so leave somebody you really don't use yet here, and check back later to see how many levels they've grown.

The guard at the gate to Saffron City says you can't go in yet, and man is he thirsty. Take the underground Path through to Vermilion for now. On the other side there are six trainers in your way. Take them all and go on into the new location.

S.S. Anne In the Pokecenter talk to the girl right next to the counter and she will give you the Versus Seeker. It lets you re-battle trainers once you have charged it up. I didn't figure out how to get this item until I was training to battle the Elite Four. Be lucky I'm here to tell you about it, because I'm sure you're the kind of person who doesn't bother talking to NPCs. I used to be too, but now I've learned my lesson. The only new item at the Mart is Ice Heal, which won't be very useful because there aren’t any nearby trainers who have the capability to freeze you.

Before boarding the S.S. Anne, go into the green-roofed building right above Gym. If you listen to the guy inside ramble about how wonderful his Rapidash is, he'll give you the Bike Voucher. Take it back to Cerulean to get the Bicycle at the Bike Shop. You couldn't pick it up earlier because it cost 1,000,000, and your limit is 999,999. The bicycle is a great item to keep registered for the select button, it lets you go faster than the Running Shoes. Also in the house next to the one where you get the Bike Voucher is a friendly trainer who wants to trade you a Farfetch'd for a Spearow. Spearow aren't that hard to come by at this point, so make the trade. This is the only way to get Farfetch'd anyway. Another item you can get is in the house right next to the Pokecenter (the one with the door). If you talk to the guy inside he'll give you the Old Rod, which lets you catch Magikarp and only Magikarp. But if you took my advice you should have a Gyarados by now, so you can just laugh in the fisherman's face if you want.

To the right of the dock is Route 11. It is blocked by a Snorlax right now, so the only reason to go in that direction would be for the trainer battles, and, if you have 30 Pokemon in the Own part of your Pokedex one of Prof. Oak's cronies will give you the Itemfinder. Conveniently enough there are a few hidden items right outside the guardhouse so look around. Another new place right next to the dock is Diglett's Cave. It is full of Diglett and Dugtrio, two ground types that will come in handy against Lt. Surge in the gym. Use a repel and put your strongest Pokemon at the front to make Dugtrio easier to find. On the other side of the cave all you can get to right now is a house with a little boy who wants to trade you a Mr. Mime for an Abra. If you caught one back on route 24, it's a good idea to trade it. Like Farfetch'd, it's the only way to get this guy.

Alright, S.S. Anne, sure. This ship is very easy to nagivate but all the trainers are avoidable except one. However, that one will be extremely hard to beat if you don't go into every room and level up your Pokemon on the trainers. They all use a variety of types so keep whoever needs more training in slot one, and switch it out for whoever's the right type before the fight actually starts. The total item count on the boat is: TM31: Brick Break, Cheri Berry, Chesto Berry, Pecha Berry, Great Ball, Stardust, X Attack, TM44: Rest, Ether, Super Potion, and Hyper Potion. You'll have to route through the trash to get some items. Once you get the berries you can take them back and talk to the guy in Cerulean City and he'll give you the Powder Jar. (0_o). This'll let you play the berry crushing game with friends if you use the Wireless adapter. Don't leave the boat without getting at least the TMs, the ship will sail after you get Cut and leave, and you will never be able to come back to it.

Take the steps on the left from the entrance and then go all the way to the right to get to that aforementioned unavoidable trainer. Guess who!

Rival's Team #3
Pidgeotto

Raticate
***
Ivysaur Lv. 20 (if your starter was Squirtle)
Wartortle Lv. 20 (if your starter was Charmander)
Charmeleon Lv. 20 (if your starter was Bulbasaur)

Yeah. Pretty much the exact same as last time only now all of his Pokemon have evolved, making their attacks deadlier and their defense stronger. You also have that advantage though, so it should be the same as ever. You may have to try a couple times, but other than that he is still not impossible to beat.

Once you take him down, go into the Captain's room. Check the trash can for laughs, and then rub his back… uh… yeah…. When he gets better he'll give you HM01 Cut. Teach it to one of the weaker Pokemon in your party. Its not a very good battle move, but it opens up new routes you couldn't get to before. Go back through Diglett's Cave to get HM05 Flash (so that’s what Brock meant…) from Prof. Oak's Aid in the guardhouse. You can also go back to Viridian City at this point if you really want to but there would be really no reason to. Your real calling right now is Lt. Surge, the Electric master.

The switches in his gym are really annoying. Once you find one, you have four choices to find the other one, because it will always be right next to the first. If you get it wrong, they reset. It's really not very fun trying to avoid all the trainers in here and get the switches at the same time, so battle them all so they won't get in the way while you hopelessly toil with trashcans. Why can't people just use them for trash?

Lt. Surge's Team
Voltorb Lv. 21
Pikachu Lv. 18
Raichu Lv. 24

Electric Pokemon only have one weakness: Ground. If you caught a Diglett or a Dugtrio now is the time to use it. That, or use your Dig TM on someone (Charmander/meleon can learn it). He should be easy if you have a Ground or Rock type, because his best attack will have no effect at all on those two types. Don't even consider sending out a Flying type, they are very weak against his attacks.

Yay! With three badges, two HMs, and hopefully at least 30 Pokemon in your Pokedex, you have beaten the first section of the game. It's not really devided into parts, but if it were, this would be the end of part one. Your next destination is Rock Tunnel; the dark cave that leads to a town whose culture is modeled around its graveyard-tower.
